5 Tips to Prevent Water Damage in Your Garage Your garage is one of the largest storage areas in your home. It is also one of the most susceptible to damage from water or other elements. Spaces for any kind of storage are especially vulnerable to water damage because small leaks grow, unnoticed, behind or beneath gathered items. This damages the floor, walls, and even the items themselves. Extensive damage may already have been done by the time these small leaks become apparent. It is important to defend this space against water intrusion. That’s why Mr. Restore wants to provide you with 5 tips to prevent water damage in your garage.
  1. Check the Doors
The main reason the garage is vulnerable to water damage is that it has the single largest entry of any area of your home.  The door might be left open, not properly sealed  or damaged without repair. Any of these reasons could let the elements in. It is not uncommon to walk into a garage and see standing water after a hard rain or flooding. What can you do? Replace the weather stripping along the bottom of the door to help minimize this problem. Don't be surprised if it has to be done on a regular basis. It is best to get into the habit of checking it regularly. Turn on the garage light and stand outside if you want to determine if the garage is properly sealed. If you can see the light through the bottom or sides of the door, you have a sealing problem.
  1. Examine the Gutters
Make sure the gutter system is clear of obstructions and that downspouts properly channel water down and away from your garage, where it puddles up and flows in the wrong direction. A heavy downpour with clogged gutters or downspouts can easily create flooded storage spaces. Remember, a clogged gutter or drainpipe can not only cause water damage to your garage, but the the rest of your house as well. Check for leaves, sticks, dirt, and other debris, especially after a storm.
  1. Check the Roof for Leaks
Roof leaks in the garage are often difficult to detect. They are usually caused by leaks in nearby pipes or from water soaking through the floor or attic above the garage. This creates unsightly stains and damage to the drywall, sheetrock and any electrical systems servicing the garage. Be sure to check for water leaks regularly.
  1. Seal the Floor
Sealing your garage floor is an excellent way to prevent water damage in your garage. It will not only make the flooring more attractive but also protect the surface in the event that water does get into the area.
  1. Prepare for Water Damage
If you do use your garage for storage, you should anticipate the worst and prepare accordingly. Use crates or shelving systems to elevate items so that they are not just sitting on the floor. Be sure the most valuable items are kept at the highest point, just for good measure. The most important purchase you will ever make is your home.
